more kinky rock ‘n’ roll – well, it’s a little bit more complicated. although some of the musical references overlap with the cramps (13th floor elevator, reckless eric, iggy and the stooges), jad wio also incorporated in their long career of course glam, but then also electronics and chanson. but then there are also references to cabaret and beyond music to poetry and literature in general. and then there is also the important reference to the philosopher gilles deleuze…yeah!

and yes, their stage presence is a lot of fun – the band basically consists of christophe kbye and denis bortek – that’s the one with the high heels…

jad wio actually just released a new album titled sex magik – i haven’t heard it yet. well, it is kind of difficult to obtain it outside of france..grrr.

but this time you get something a lot older. some sweet rarity: jad wio live a la dolce vita.

ripped from vinyl@192, two mp3-files: side 1 / side 2. the tracklist reads as follows:

Side 1
1 Taïba
2 Wsd (Walk in the sky with diamonds)
3 Colors in my dream
Side 2
4 Rythm’ box bunny
5 The ballad of candy valentine
6 Cellar dance
7 Young girl

get it here.

on this record, jad wio sound something like “new wave rock ‘n’ roll”, partly due to the drumbox, partly because they have a certain hysterical quality. that same hysterical quality (something like an overwound music-box) is also shown very well in their coverversion of the 13th floor elevator’s you’re gonna miss me:

then please visit their homepage.

and here you find an interesting little interview with denis bortek (in french, though).

insert: high heels – lux interior

high heels and men do have a history in music: there were the new york dolls, there was glam with marc bolan and david bowie (hm, although platforms might do not qualify), there was 80’s hair metal, and there is of course prince.

and then there is lux interior, singer of the cramps. i have seen them live, and boy, that was an experience. so you have a drummer that looks straight out of vegas, working there as an elvis imitator in a wedding chapel. then you have two ladies playing guitar – the gorgeous poison ivy – and bass chewing gum and looking utterly bored in a mean way. you get the feeling that if you show your admiration and they do not like you they’re gonna kick you… and then you have lux interior, singing, howling, screamin his way through the show, dressed in lack with – you guessed it right – high heels. mind you, mister interior is not a small man… so he runs up and down the stage, goes on his knees, rolls on the floor and even climbs up the speakers… barking mad.

then there is the music: rock ‘n’ roll that sounds like elvis is still alive, living in new york in the gutter, on heroin, and making a living as a sex-slave… yeah, it is all charmingly kinky. to give you a musical as well as a visual idea here the video to bikini girls with machine guns:

and for the encore of the concert i saw, lux took his clothing off (NOT the high heels) and appeared only in a little see-thru slip with a pink heart stitched on the front. most charming… so at the end it looked something like this:

yeah, rock ‘n’ roll, baby!

well, they were a cool band with a cool look. and while other artists played the troops to show their support for the boys, or the prison because they could relate to the dark side (johnny cash) or because they tried to be real macho (metallica), the cramps played…the napa state mental hospital:

and since you might like some more music from the cramps, i prepared for you a bootleg. it’s a live recording, more precise, a BBC broadcast from the brixton academy, london 12.2.90.

the tracklist reads as follows:

1.Mule skinner blues.
2.What’s inside a girl ?
3.Her love rubbed off.
4.Journey to the centre of a girl.
5.All women are bad.
6.You’ve got good taste.
7.Drug train.
8.Can your pussy do the dog.

if i’m not mistaken i got that recording from pip over at sfrp – thanks a lot!

now you can get it here.

and here you’ll find the official the cramps website.

it started with an ad in the german music magazine spex. then i had the new butt magazine in my letterbox. and then i received this email with a clubprogram for this weekend. so i thought: it is about time to do a post!

what am i talking about? well, i am talking about high heels. although we might have to be thankful to sex and the city for drawing attention to the fact that high heels can be beautiful objects, the talk inside and outside this series about women obsessing about high heels got a little bit tiring (as well as the series). especially since they overlooked one thing: high heels look really fantastic and dangerous on men. and yes, lately this seems to be again a hip thing to do. and i’m all for it. but have a look for yourself:

from the september/oktober 2007 edition of the german “magazin für popkultur” spex comes this great ad for the clothing stores herr von eden:

then from butt magazine no. 21 (late autumn / early winter 2007) comes not only a fantastically fierce cover

but you’ll find inside a series of pictures of lads (photography by andreas larsson, casting by jeannete) – here you see jeanette herself:

then i just received an email informing me about what is happening this weekend – in that email was the following pic (i am not really sure who it is and where it comes from originally – if anybody knows, let me know!):

aaah – zorro with high heels!

for more high heels there is of course well known manolo blahnik – but i would like to draw your attention also to the cute christian louboutin and his creations.
